Here is Rydell High’s senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding ‘Burger Palace Boys’ and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking ‘Pink Ladies’ in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head ‘greaser’ Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their ‘Summer Nights’ as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as ‘Greased Lightnin”, ‘It’s Raining on Prom Night’, ‘Alone at the Drive-In Movie’ recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. An 8-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world’s most popular musicals.
SPECIAL PERFORMANCE ONE NIGHT ONLY – JANUARY 14, 2014
2-Bit Palomino’ is the 2011 and 2013 Texas Vocal Group of the Year. Over the past 3½ years, this trio of singer/songwriters have created quite a name for themselves having performed all over the country and at major events like The Kerrville Folk Festival and The WildFlower Festival in Texas. Bill Ward, Andi Renfree and Peter ‘Ren’ Renfree (a native of Tustin) are all excellent songwriters and artists in their own right, but when they get together they make magic happen. Their vocal harmonies are nothing short of amazing, and their songs are all well written and beautifully performed. 2-Bit Palomino will grace the stage of the Encore Theater with their special brand of music along with their special guest Jesse MacLeod.
Jesse MacLeod has been given the gift a naturally distinctive, soulful voice. Being the son of bluesman Doug MacLeod, the young singer/songwriter began absorbing the blues at a very young age. Also heavily influenced by contemporary folk artists such as Amos Lee and Ryan Adams, he has carved out a unique sound not often heard on records today. He has had the honor of receiving the award of Best Performer in the Westcoast Songwriters February 2009 Songwriter Competition in Hollywood and was a Top Three Male Finalist in the 2009 So Cal Music Live Competition. He has released two commercial recordings; In Between Homes (2010) and Red Flags (2012). “As The Summer Wanes” from the In Between Homes EP was featured on an episode of the second season of NBC’s The Voice. This will be a night you will remember and one you won’t want to miss!
MARCH 7 – APRIL 26, 2014
East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. Along with the dazzling score, the incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet, ‘The Small House of Uncle Thomas,’ is one of the all-time marvels of the musical stage.

It’s A Wonderful Life is a musical adaptation of Frank Capra’s Christmas classic masterpiece film. This is the saga of George Bailey, the Everyman from the small town of Bedford Falls, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been squashed by family obligations and civic duty, and whose gurdian angel has to descend on Christmas Eve to save him from despair, and to remind him – by showing him what the world would have been like had he never been born – that he has had after all, a wonderful life.
